Home Education Inspiration: Boats and Beaches

We’re going on a ferry on Monday, for a day trip to the Isle of Wight! Including a trip to the beach! Thinking about that, I chose the topic for this week, Boats and Beaches!!
This home education week was filled with grumpy teething baby and bad weather, so it has been a little tricky..but that’s the fun of home education, right? Incorporating daily life into learning! xD I’m sure I will learn how to make it all work better, as we go on!

I again started off by making a playlist on youtube of things to watch, now this wasn’t as easy as last time! And Jijah definitely wasn’t as impressed as last time. I started off finding a song for baby Juju(row row), then as we’re going on a ferry, I wanted to find something about ferrys and found some cool shows on youtube called Things that go TV and Mighty Machines! Jijah kinda like those but the 2nd one was rather long. I then threw in an episode of Noddy’s island adventure, seeing as we’re going on an island! and then I found PLAYDAYS!!! good old kids TV! about ‘Days by the sea’ perfect! Jijah quite liked this one, although it’s very long! and a couple of the stories are a bit weird!! Then I found some kipper and peppa pig programmes about going to the beach. Let’s just say we didn’t watch it twice a day!!! haha..

There was one thing we learnt from watching the youtube playlist, and that was from playdays, they showed the viewer how to make a paper boat! It was quite a funny 15 minutes because Mummy found it a little tricky at first and had to replay the tutorial about 15 times! We finally made it though!

The only proper messy play session we had this week was some painting, we painted some paper to cut into triangles and make into a boat collage. Juju helped us too!
Jijah used a few different methods of getting the pain onto the paper! rollers, paint brushes, his hands!!

I had a little search on Twinkl for some worksheets to do with ‘the seaside’ and ferrys/boats and found a few. We did a few during the week, ones working on counting and tracing numbers. Jijah loves maths!

I found it quite hard to think up seaside snacks this week!! I didn’t have time to pinterest!(har har!)
We decided on boat sandwiches(Jijah was impressed at least!! xD) and I found some ‘sea snacks’ seaside themed gummy snacks! Who would have thought it?!

This was a fun activity, making boats out of kitchen sponges and seeing if they floated! They did! Really well, and they’re so light they actually sail!(helped that it was windy!)
To make the boats we cut a little hole in the sponge and put a skewer(I think perhaps a lolly stick would have been better!) in the sponge and cut some triangle card sails.

We also did sand play(I think this was Jijah’s favourite-we don’t have sand too often)
We of course, did sand play because we wanted to build sand castles like you do at the beach!

The last planned activity we did this week was some sticker ‘sticking’ and postcard writing! We talked about how you send a postcard on holiday etc…and Elijah made a little ‘ferry pirate’ scene out of stickers! I was impressed with his sticker placement! All thought up himself!
He chose a couple of people to post the cards to and did them a little sticker message! We will post them tomorrow from the Isle of Wight!
A blog about that will soon follow! 🙂

The last thing we did was dig out all the boat and beach holiday storybooks we have. This included kipper at the beach, a book about boats, noddy and the ark!(ok not a ferry but!!) and we had another try at learning our phonics, we did B for beach and boat, as we did for bear last week, but I don’t think it’s quite ‘going in’ with Jijah yet.

He keeps telling me the b is a 6 and not a b!!! He’s a numbers boy what can I say! Think we’ll try again later…!

That’s all til next time folks! Not such an interesting one this week, but it’s not been an easy week! 🙂 Thanks for reading!
